LIFE OF PI

When I was watching the Oscars I found myself slightly annoyed at the selections. For starters Les miserables won against the Hobbit in best makeup! Well not a single movie I had seen at that time won anything and I was a little put out. But then I watched possibly the most annoying movie of that night. And that movie was Life of Pi. Initially I was skeptical about it but almost instantly I changed my mind about it because Life of PI was awesome! It was a great little story with characters you really care about plus an interesting and enthralling story that really makes you feel like your really experiencing Pi's predicament. In the film, Piscine "Pi" Patel is marooned in a row boat with a Siberian tiger due to a boat containing his family and their self run zoo sinking during a storm. For the long period he is on the boat he eventually develops a friendship with the tiger. After many perilous adventures including an island made up of man eating plant material, Pi finally makes it back to civilization but but loses his new friend soon after coming ashore. All in all this all works rather nicely and yes, I do believe it deserved it's best picture nomination.  But enough gushing over the story, let's get to the FX! Life of Pi employs cutting edge computer animation to bring the creatures of L.O.P to life. While there are many creatures in the film, including a hyena a island of meerkats and some beautiful humpback whales, the best creature by far is the tiger "Richard Parker". The tiger is a wonder to behold, given an anatomically accurate inner skeleton a realistic set of muscles and an ingenious particle system to represent the fur all lovingly painted and textured for the final creature. pictured below is an unskinned model of the tiger.
As you can see a lot of work went in to Richard here. Sadly it did have a one con. I was slightly disappointed by the lack of practical effects but it's only a minor thing that really doesn't matter but  do think it could have used some. Still with this type of film you really can't do better than Life of Pi. It may not be a slam bang shoot em up action film, but for the record it won a place in My list of favorite movies.                                          SCORE: 4/5  STORY:4/5 SPECIAL EFFECTS:5/5 VISUALS:5/5 MUSIC:5/5

  1. I apologize for the poor grammar on this post. I was rushing to finish because we had to get to an event.
